What is Dapoxetine?
Dapoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) specifically designed for the treatment of premature ejaculation (PE) in men aged 18 to 64 years. It helps improve control over ejaculation and extends the time to ejaculation during sexual activity.
Who Should NOT Use Dapoxetine?
Do not use dapoxetine if:
- You have a known allergy to dapoxetine or any of its ingredients.
- You have heart problems, such as heart failure, significant heart valve disease, or a history of fainting due to low blood pressure.
- You are taking medications known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or have stopped taking them within the last 14 days.
- You are taking thioridazine or have stopped taking it within the last 14 days.
- You take SSRIs, SNRIs, lithium, linezolid, or tramadol, as these may interact dangerously with dapoxetine.
- You have moderate to severe liver impairment.
How to Use Dapoxetine
As-Needed Use:
- Take 1 tablet 1 to 3 hours before anticipated sexual activity.
- Do not exceed 1 dose in a 24-hour period.
- Important Notes:
- Dapoxetine should be swallowed whole with a full glass of water.
- It can be taken with or without food.
- Avoid alcohol while taking dapoxetine, as it can increase the risk of side effects such as dizziness and fainting.
What Should You Tell Your Healthcare Provider?
Before starting dapoxetine, provide a complete medical history, including:
- All medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs, supplements, and herbal remedies.
- Your medical conditions, especially if you have a history of:
- Heart conditions, including arrhythmias or heart valve disease.
- Low blood pressure or conditions leading to fainting.
- Liver or kidney disease, which may require dosage adjustments.
- Mental health conditions, such as depression, bipolar disorder, or a history of suicidal thoughts.
- Seizures or epilepsy.
Possible Drug Interactions
Dapoxetine may interact with certain medications or substances, increasing the risk of side effects or altering drug efficacy:
- MAOIs and Thioridazine: May cause dangerous interactions; avoid use.
- SSRIs and SNRIs: Combining dapoxetine with these medications may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome.
- CYP3A4 Inhibitors: Medications such as ketoconazole and ritonavir may increase dapoxetine levels, leading to adverse effects.
- Alcohol: May enhance side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, and fainting.
Always consult your healthcare provider for guidance before combining dapoxetine with any other medications.
Serious Risks and Side Effects
If you experience the following, stop taking dapoxetine and seek immediate medical attention:
- Fainting or Dizziness: Especially if associated with standing up quickly.
- Seizures: If you experience a seizure, stop using dapoxetine and contact a doctor.
- Mood Changes: Including feelings of depression, agitation, or suicidal thoughts.
- Severe Allergic Reactions: Symptoms include rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing.
Most Common Side Effects
Dapoxetine is generally well-tolerated. Common side effects include:
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Diarrhea
- Dry mouth
- Insomnia
- Fatigue
Important Precautions
- Fainting Risk: Dapoxetine may cause sudden drops in blood pressure. Avoid activities that require full alertness, such as driving or operating machinery, until you know how dapoxetine affects you.
- Not for Regular Daily Use: Dapoxetine should only be taken when needed before sexual activity.
- Sexual Activity: Discuss with your doctor if it is safe to engage in sexual activity based on your health conditions.
